VOLUNTEERING WITH THE KBCA : HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Earn Volunteer Hours for Distributing KBCA fall newsletter or just get some great exercise!

The KBCA has a fall newsletter that you can read right here on this website. However, as many of your neighbours might like to have it delivered (otherwise, they might not read it...) we would love to have a group of volunteers available for distribution. Send me an email, if this appeals to you! (Alexandra Mosquin@sympatico.ca)

Let's go neighbours! There's a lot to do in Beaverbrook to keep it a great place to live. The KBCA has several committees (sometimes a committee of one seeking to grow...) that oversee community association projects.

Development Issues

This committee is critical to our neighbourhood's longterm survival. Being on this committee requires constant vigilance, monitoring the goings-on at Ottawa City Hall to see if there have been any zoning changes in our neighbourhood or proposals for new development. Do you like politics? Well local politics are always the most interesting. To get involved, contact Gordon Henderson at mailto:gordon.henderson@sympatico.ca.

KBCA Website

We have a long way to go but we have big ambition for this website. We would like it to be full of usable information for Beaverbrook residents. This fall we are searching for high school students who would like to volunteer their time to work on much-needed basic web pages. But any KBCA member is invited to offer their services. Anyone interested should contact our webmaster Andrew at web.kbca@gmail.com

Communications

Our print communications guru is Fred Boyd who is the author of countless articles in the Kanata Kourier about the KBCA. This year we are seeking someone to oversee electronic communication with our membership. This entails being in charge of the KBCA email directory and sending out notices for meetings. Do you have expertise in this area? Could you do this with one hand tied behind your back???? Then maybe you could come and help us out and handle it for the KBCA.

Membership Committee

Currently this committee oversees a door-to-door membership drive every fall and throws a great Christmas party to thank everyone who participated. Alexandra Mosquin heads the committee, with membership expert Dot Smale (currently our vice-president) providing backup. Over 50 canvassers make up the rest of the committee – but they don't have to attend any meetings!

Beaverbrook Character and Heritage Committee

Although not a formal committee (yet...), there are a number of executive members working to maintain Beaverbrook's distinctive character. In 2007-2008, Eileen Howell coordinated a KBCA investigation into all aspects of Beaverbrook's distinctive lighting. If you love Beavebrook's cool suburban look, this is the committee for you. Contact Eileen, definitely. She's at ehowell@magma.ca

Special Events

Can you party? Can you plan a party? In addition to our Christmas Party, KBCA's main event is our clean-up day scheduled this year for Saturday 2 May. Everyone on the KBCA is involved in this morning of fun that involves spring cleaning our neighbourhood.

Last Christmas we held a contest for the most outstanding Christmas lawn display in Beaverbrook. Would you like to coordinate an event that would generate community pride? Come and join the Executive.

Individual Expertise

Do you have a particular expertise that you are willing to volunteer? On many occasions, the KBCA needs top quality advice in order to represent Beaverbrook interests to the City of Ottawa. Are you someone who could help? Professionals such as lawyers, computer specialists, urban planners, and accountants, for example, have specialized insight that is useful to a community association, even if you can only provide it now and then or for a particular issue.

Finance

Our small budget comes from our membership and we want to make sure that all of it goes back into making Beaverbrook great. Last summer, we had our entrance gardens redone. This fall we intend to purchase a new snow blower for our Beaverbrook ice rinks. Do you have ideas about how we should spend KBCA money? Come and get involved in the Executive. We are also seeking someone to learn how to be treasurer of our organization by assisting our current treasurer, Jay Conn.
